Today I attended the funeral of Cardinal Cathal Daly. He was the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh and leader of the church in Ireland during a critical time in the island’s history.
He gave great moral leadership, and showed real moral courage, in opposing the use of violence to achieve political goals. The so called physical force tradition in Ireland has had a great deal of undeserved respectability from historians and romantics. Cardinal Daly restored morality to the debate by stressing the sacredness of human life and the total unacceptability of the use of violence as a means of resolving the differences that exist in Northern Ireland.
